OBP (Outdoor Based Projects)

Outdoor based projects work with groups of young people across County Durham and Darlington who are identified as requiring support by their school using a range of referral criteria areas (contact us for further details). Support is provided using our peer to peer delivery approach via our youth development workers aged 16-25yrs.

Groups work outside of the school/classroom environment for the majority of the project to encourage engagement and participation.  All transport is provided, project duration,  content and focus can be flexible and dynamic to accommodate individual school requirements.

Outdoor based projects seek to develop personal skills, facilitate informed choice, build confidence and increase self-worth. We want to help young people to feel better about themselves and become more integrated into their school and community. Using our 3 step model Education, Community and Activity the projects include;

These qualifications are provided by DAAC, the awarding organisation being City and Guilds and progression opportunities to higher level qualifications across this suite are available as required.  page7image16648

The group take part in Community project/s. The objective is to make a positive contribution to the local area, this can be any community including the school.  This helps to build personal esteem and self-confidence for the students alongside increasing community confidence and positivity around young people. Examples include horticultural activities, intergenerational work, litter picks, restoration and maintenance of public places etc.

The students take part in Activity based rewards throughout the year as long as they maintain improvement in the following core elements; attendance, work, effort and behaviour. These areas monitored throughout with relevant information provided to schools on a regular basis. Examples of activities include but are not limited to climbing/bouldering, fishing, foraging, beach craft, forestry, hiking, treasure hunts, games and competitions.

Since HAGGRID began in 2012, approximately 1000 young people have undergone the outdoor based programme.

82% of these ‘high risk and additionally vulnerable’ young people have continued their development within further/higher education and/or full-time employment.
